Location

The Ex Vetrerie Sciarra in Rome in Via dei Volsci 22 - inside the San Lorenzo district, meeting place for university students. The Ex Vetrerie are located about 100 meters from the "Verano" exit of the Tangenziale Est. Ample parking near Piazzale del Verano. With public transport: at about two hundred meters is the Piazzale del Verano, a nerve center where several lines intersect. Bus 163, 88, 545, 71 (Tiburtina and Termini station), 492. Tram 3 (Trastevere and Ostiense station), 19. The B Policlino metro station is just over 1km away.

The surrounding environment is characterized by buildings of different sizes - variable above all by height - it allows a wide choice of options, offering a jagged panorama. The walls on which it is possible to project are many and different from each other in terms of size, position and angle to the roof of the building of departure.

360°

The view from the roof of the Ex-Vetrerie Sciarra starting from the main entrance and turning to the right, as if the center of rotation were on the roof of the current headquarters of the La Sapienza University; looks like in the following images

From these views we notice the presence of different vertical walls on which it is possible to project. In addition, some wide angles that overlook various jagged roofs could be considered for further projections, so as to offer the viewer a greater immersion of the visual experience.

Choice of the Facade

In this first hypothesis the façade of the structure on the back of the Ex Vetrerie (1) and the building on the right of the main entrance (2) are taken into account because they are distant and of different dimensions; these characteristics would offer viewers - positioned on the horizontal plane in red - a wider viewing angle. This scenario would require a greater number of projectors, having to cover more facades; this obviously would result in a substantial increase in installation costs.

The second hypothesis is to project on a single facade (2 in the previous figure), more suited to serve the theme of the almost human that will have to be seen in the video; for the projected human figures will be much larger than the real.

Organization
of Space

Since the façade (F) is communicating with a terrace, we will place the projector (P) on it at a distance of 12 m, so that the entire façade can be mapped. The loudspeakers (A1, A2) will be placed at the center of the terrace and directed towards the public that will be on the adjacent terrace, but calculating the position of the projector so as not to intersect the solid located in front of the wall (as shown below). Note the excessive height needed for the structure where the projector should be positioned.

Therefore it is preferable to install the projector at a lower distance, adding another to divide the projected screen, having to map a total surface that has a diagonal of 39.37 ft. Thus obtaining two screens of a height of 15.58 ft and a length of 24.93 ft.

The projector that lends itself best to this surface while maintaining a relatively low price of the installation (£ 578 per projector) is Vivitek DH558, which allows projection at a distance of 37.33 ft. For the purpose of the projection, we then superimpose two projectors of the same type.

Tecnical File

In order to be performed the video projection needs:

- 2 Vivitek DH 558 projectors (P1, P2 - £ 578 each)

- 2 Speakers (A1, A2 - £ 88 each)

- support for projectors, PC and audio mixer, so you can control the entire installation from one location

- The total price necessary for the installation is therefore about £ 1100

Video Editing

I decided to use this projection to give a visual interpretation of man in modern society, starting from the thought of the philosopher and sociologist Zygmunt Bauman - who in some works expressed the concept of liquid society. In our century man manages to appear omnipresent through technology, constantly putting himself in touch with his peers in a dislocated way, creating relationships and relationships in non-existent places in reality and only virtually representable.

The background of the video projection studied for the façade n ° 2 is constituted by intersections of images and videos representing classical and modern architectures of various metropolis alternating with maritime landscapes. In the foreground two human silhouettes hold a cell phone in hand - symbol of the development of communication and virtual ubiquity conquered by man. These two shapes, however, do not remain motionless, but tremble until they multiply in a syncopated rotation around their axis - movement constantly accompanied by an incessant redundancy of drops - and then vanish leaving the viewer in front of the flow of landscapes and the flowing liquid sound . In the review of the first video we find the same elements of the background, now come to merge together, moving in a concentric way so as to make the setting liquid and forming a drop of architecture, being half the drop specular to the other. So as to represent how this liquid society modifies man by shaking it. The two human silhouettes with the cell phone seen previously are also subject to the intensity of the image wavering, coming to cross each other so as to represent the human relationship through technology. As in the first video, music plays a fundamental role - the frenetic sound of a drop that increases rhythmically, tolling incessantly like the images.

To achieve this final result I have used programs such as:

- Photoshop, to create the masks of the two present shapes, both obtained from two photos made by me

- Premiere, for editing.

- Resolume Arena, for video editing, after having experimented with the different effects it offers, so as to find the whole that best represented the project idea; for setting Video mapping through input and output selection settings; to record the video.

- Audacity, for audio editing.

- Rhinoceros, software for 3D and 2D modeling, where I studied and composed the technical views for the spatial division of the exhibition.

- OBS Studio, in order to better explain the various steps of the project and make visible a representation of the final mapping and the interface of Resolume Arena, so as to better present the final result.

The facade chosen for the projection is suitable for combining sound, image and surface. In fact, the structure converges at the tip of the sloping roof, thus recalling the shape of a drop. Thus the projection is centered and presents various images that highlight the mirror image.
